Slovenian Citizenship Applications and Passports

You will need an official copy of your birth certificate. You must write to the applicable agency where you were born for an official copy with a seal. This must have an Apostille stamp affixed and both documents must be translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian translator.

Birth certificates: An official copy of everyone in the line of your Slovenian ancestors up to the generation that establishes your Slovenian connection. All ancestral documents must be official copies with seals, have Apostille stamps, and be translated into Slovenian.

If applicable, you will need an original Australian or New Zealand marriage certificate with an Apostille stamp affixed. Both documents must be translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian translator.

You will need a Criminal Record Check, which is typically a National Police Certificate issued by the AFP (if from Australia, see link here) or a Criminal Record Check from the Ministry of Justice (if from New Zeland, see link here).

This will need to then have an Apostille stamp affixed to it and both the Police Check and Apostille translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian Translator.

This document must not be older than 6 months from the date of issue.

If you were not born in Australia or New Zealand, then you will also need a second Criminal Record Check from the country of your birth. This is also to be Apostilled and translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian Translator.

You will need to present a valid Australia, New Zealand or other passport or Certificate of Citizenship to prove which country you are currently a citizen of.

All of the information on this document must match the names in the birth and marriage certificates as well as the police check.

You will need to write a short biography containing information about yourself, your heritage, your connection to Slovenia and the Slovenian people and why you wish to become a citizen of Slovenia. It should contain details such as:

• Your name, date and place of birth, education and current employment
• Your ancestors’ names, dates and places of birth
• How your ancestors emigrated out of Slovenia
• Your motivation and reasons for wanting to apply for Slovenian citizenship

This letter is typically 1-2 pages in length, however can be longer if you wish to provide further information.

The biography must be in the Slovenian language. If you cannot write this in Slovenian, then we can translate this into Slovenian for you.

If your ancestors emigrated from the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, then you will need to demonstrate their departure from Slovenia and also your connection/relation to them.

At least one passport from the ancestor is required, and ideally other documents to prove citizenship. You will need to provide evidence that your ancestors were Slovenian citizens. This may include:

• Slovenian passports or identity documents
• Birth certificates from Slovenia
• Marriage certificates from Slovenia
• Military records
• Immigration/emigration records
• Other official documents proving Slovenian citizenship of your ancestors

If your ancestors emigrated from the territory of former countries to which the territory of present-day Slovenia belonged at the time, such as Yugoslavia or Austria-Hungary, then you will need to prove when they emigrated and that they belonged to the Slovenian people. This applies if your ancestors left Slovenia prior to 25 June 1991 (Slovenia’s independence date).

People whose ancestors are/were Slovenian, yet have not emigrated anywhere, will typically provide evidence of this kind.

If this applies to you, then you will need to provide some evidence that you are a member of the Slovenian people and that you have Slovenian ancestry. These documents must demonstrate that your ancestors declared themselves to be Slovenian and include documents such as military records, birth certificates, marriage certificates, student enrolment records, other certificates, employment records.

This does not usually apply for people living in Australia or New Zealand as your ancestors emigrated out of Slovenia.

If you’re applying based on Slovenian ancestry and were born abroad, you may need to submit a declaration of Slovenian citizenship (Obrazec SD3). This must be done:

• Before age 18 (by parents), or
• Between ages 18-36 (by yourself)
• At a Slovenian diplomatic mission or in Slovenia at an administrative unit

This document must be in Slovenian and we can translate it for you if needed.

Proof of means to support yourself and family members may be required as part of your application.

If you are applying for Slovenian citizenship for your children as well, then you will need to additionally provide the following documents for each child:

• An original birth certificate for the child. If born in Australia or New Zealand, this must then have an Apostille stamp affixed to it. Both the birth certificate and the Apostille stamp must be translated into Slovenian.
• Written consent of the second parent that they agree to their child obtaining Slovenian citizenship.
• Proof of Citizenship of the child such as a passport.
• If both parents are Slovenian citizens, you will need to complete the following form: Vpis otroka v MR MLD.
• If only one parent is a Slovenian citizen: complete the Vpis otroka v MR MLD Priglasitev form.
