Which documents do I need to apply for Slovenian citizenship by descent?
Below is the list of documents which our clients are often asked for when applying for Slovenian citizenship by descent. We encourage you to contact your local Slovenian Embassy or Consulate for advice as requirements do sometimes change.

Steps to Apply for Slovenian Citizenship by Descent in Australia or New Zealand
If your ancestors are Slovenian, then you may be eligible to apply for Slovenian citizenship under Slovenian Citizenship Act!
Step One: Obtain relevant documentation
You will need to gather all of the relevant documents below in order to support your citizenship application.
BIRTH CERTIFICATE WITH APOSTILLE STAMP – TRANSLATED
You will need an official copy of your birth certificate. You must write to the applicable agency where you were born for an official copy with a seal. This must have an Apostille stamp affixed and both documents must be translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian translator.
ANCESTRY DOCUMENTATION – TRANSLATED
Birth certificates: An official copy of everyone in the line of your Slovenian ancestors up to the generation that establishes your Slovenian connection. All ancestral documents must be official copies with seals, have Apostille stamps, and be translated into Slovenian.
MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE WITH APOSTILLE STAMP – TRANSLATED
If applicable, you will need an original Australian or New Zealand marriage certificate with an Apostille stamp affixed. Both documents must be translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian translator.
CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK – TRANSLATED
You will need a Criminal Record Check, which is typically a National Police Certificate issued by the AFP (if from Australia, see link here) or a Criminal Record Check from the Ministry of Justice (if from New Zeland, see link here).
This will need to then have an Apostille stamp affixed to it and both the Police Check and Apostille translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian Translator.
This document must not be older than 6 months from the date of issue.
If you were not born in Australia or New Zealand, then you will also need a second Criminal Record Check from the country of your birth. This is also to be Apostilled and translated into Slovenian by an official certified Slovenian Translator.
PROOF OF CURRENT CITIZENSHIP
You will need to present a valid Australia, New Zealand or other passport or Certificate of Citizenship to prove which country you are currently a citizen of.
All of the information on this document must match the names in the birth and marriage certificates as well as the police check.
BIOGRAPHY OR MOTIVATION LETTER IN SLOVENIAN
You will need to write a short biography containing information about yourself, your heritage, your connection to Slovenia and the Slovenian people and why you wish to become a citizen of Slovenia. It should contain details such as:
- Your name, date and place of birth, education and current employment
- Your ancestors’ names, dates and places of birth
- How your ancestors emigrated out of Slovenia
- Your motivation and reasons for wanting to apply for Slovenian citizenship
This letter is typically 1-2 pages in length, however can be longer if you wish to provide further information.
The biography must be in the Slovenian language. If you cannot write this in Slovenian, then we can translate this into Slovenian for you.
PROOF OF SLOVENIAN ANCESTRY – EMIGRANTS FROM SLOVENIA
If your ancestors emigrated from the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, then you will need to demonstrate their departure from Slovenia and also your connection/relation to them.
At least one passport from the ancestor is required, and ideally other documents to prove citizenship. You will need to provide evidence that your ancestors were Slovenian citizens. This may include:
- Slovenian passports or identity documents
- Birth certificates from Slovenia
- Marriage certificates from Slovenia
- Military records
- Immigration/emigration records
- Other official documents proving Slovenian citizenship of your ancestors
If your ancestors emigrated from the territory of former countries to which the territory of present-day Slovenia belonged at the time, such as Yugoslavia or Austria-Hungary, then you will need to prove when they emigrated and that they belonged to the Slovenian people. This applies if your ancestors left Slovenia prior to 25 June 1991 (Slovenia’s independence date).
PROOF OF SLOVENIAN ANCESTRY – MEMBER OF THE SLOVENIAN PEOPLE
People whose ancestors are/were Slovenian, yet have not emigrated anywhere, will typically provide evidence of this kind.
If this applies to you, then you will need to provide some evidence that you are a member of the Slovenian people and that you have Slovenian ancestry. These documents must demonstrate that your ancestors declared themselves to be Slovenian and include documents such as military records, birth certificates, marriage certificates, student enrolment records, other certificates, employment records.
This does not usually apply for people living in Australia or New Zealand as your ancestors emigrated out of Slovenia.
DECLARATION LETTER (FOR DESCENDANTS ABROAD)
If you’re applying based on Slovenian ancestry and were born abroad, you may need to submit a declaration of Slovenian citizenship (Obrazec SD3). This must be done:
- Before age 18 (by parents), or
- Between ages 18-36 (by yourself)
- At a Slovenian diplomatic mission or in Slovenia at an administrative unit
This document must be in Slovenian and we can translate it for you if needed.
PROOF OF FINANCIAL MEANS
Proof of means to support yourself and family members may be required as part of your application.
PARENTS APPLYING WITH CHILDREN UNDER 18
If you are applying for Slovenian citizenship for your children as well, then you will need to additionally provide the following documents for each child:
- An original birth certificate for the child. If born in Australia or New Zealand, this must then have an Apostille stamp affixed to it. Both the birth certificate and the Apostille stamp must be translated into Slovenian.
- Written consent of the second parent that they agree to their child obtaining Slovenian citizenship.
- Proof of Citizenship of the child such as a passport.
- If both parents are Slovenian citizens, you will need to complete the following form: Vpis otroka v MR MLD.
- If only one parent is a Slovenian citizen: complete the Vpis otroka v MR MLD Priglasitev form.
All of these documents must be in Slovenian and we can translate them for you if needed.

Step Two: Complete the Application Form
If you are applying for Slovenian citizenship as an adult based on Slovenian ancestry (extraordinary naturalisation for Slovenian emigrants and their descendants), you must complete the following form: Vloga za sprejem v državljanstvo Republike Slovenije
This form must be filled out in the Slovenian language. If you are unable to do so, then we can translate it for you and assist with completing the form in Slovenian.
Step Three: Make an appointment with the Slovenian Embassy or Consulate
Depending on where you live in Australia, you will need to make an appointment with the relevant Slovenian Embassy or Consulate to both submit the forms and to pay for the citizenship fee application. You can only submit an application for citizenship in person.
It is strongly advised that on the day of your appointment that you take all of your original and translated document (with extra copies) with you to the Embassy or Consulate.
Currently the waiting period to be awarded Slovenian citizenship is 12-24 months, however this varies with each application and from person to person.
Frequently Asked Questions
Although it may seem daunting at first, applying for Slovenian citizenship is a fairly straightforward process for most. Here are some of the questions which we commonly get asked by our clients.

Do I need a lawyer or migration service?
No! Most our clients apply for citizenship on their own without engaging any lawyers or citizenship services. It is entirely possible, and cheaper, to follow the steps on the Slovenian government website and apply on your own.
How do I get the required documents?
You can ask family in Slovenia, or email/call civil registry offices in Slovenia yourself and request that they provide official documents such as birth certificates from your ancestors.
Do I need paper or digital translations?
The Slovenian embassy seems to prefer printed and ‘wet stamped’ certified translations, so we always mail copies out to clients when we know that they are applying for Slovenian citizenship.
